Cruises & Marinas
In the last 20 years, the Sea of Cortes has become an ideal site for mid-size cruise ship excursions. The experience is unique with opportunities to practice kayaking and scuba diving in remote areas, gray whale watching and visits to several islands in comfort and luxury.
Several small companies offer 7 -day scientific tourist trips visiting the area from the Bay of La Paz and the islands Cerralvo and Espíritu Santo and then taking you through San José Island and the Marine Park of Loreto with its 5 islands (Carmen, Coronado, Danzante, Monserrat and Catalana). For these excursions, you start in La Paz, departing from the main tourist dock located on the boardwalk of the city, the Malecón.
Major cruise ships, such as the Carnival Corporation, arrive via the Port of Pichilingue and then travel by bus 25 minutes to the central area of La Paz to spend the day. Some of the ports-of-call on major cruise ships include Santa Rosalía, located north of La Paz, and then onto the port of Puerto Vallarta, located on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico. These cruise ships travel from San Diego and some make connections from other cruise ships from Vancouver, Canada. Because La Paz receives more than twenty thousand visitors per year through this market, it has become an important leisure travel destination.
La Paz also offers services to smaller vessels for visitors with private boats and yachts. There are several choices of first-class marina services. You will find them at both extremes of The Malecón (boardwalk). You can also navigate around the Sea of Cortés by accessing the different ports found along the coast of the state, offering comfort and good service.
